LYNIO Global DNS is a high-performance authoritative DNS service designed to host and resolve public domain zones with sub-millisecond query response times. Built upon PowerDNS Authoritative and a zero-copy LMDB backend, your DNS records are replicated in real-time across European edge gateway nodes.
Prerequisites
- An active LYNIO Cloud account.
- A registered domain name owned by your organization (e.g., from TransIP, SIDN, EURid, Namecheap, etc.).
- Administrative access to your domain registrar's DNS settings.
Authoritative Nameservers
When you delegate a domain to LYNIO Global DNS, you configure your registrar to point to LYNIO's official authoritative nameservers:
| Nameserver | IPv4 Address | IPv6 Address |
|---|---|---|
ns1.lynio.net | 86.95.97.160 | Dynamic Dual-Stack |
ns2.lynio.net | 86.95.97.160 | Dynamic Dual-Stack |
Creating a DNS Zone
- Log in to the LYNIO Console.
- In the navigation sidebar, go to Networking > Global DNS.
- Click the Create Zone button in the upper right corner.
- Enter your root domain name in the Zone Name field (e.g.,
example.euormycompany.com). - Choose your default Zone TTL (Seconds) (default is
3600seconds / 1 hour). - (Optional) If you plan to use an external secondary DNS provider, check Enable AXFR Zone Transfer and enter the authorized IP addresses or subnets.
- Click Create Zone.
Once created, LYNIO automatically initializes the zone with the default SOA and NS records, generates DNSSEC cryptographic keys, and commits the zone to the edge gateway network.
Supported DNS Record Types & Syntax Reference
LYNIO Global DNS supports all standard DNS resource record types. The table below details syntax guidelines and examples:
| Record Type | Name Example | Content / Target Example | Description |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | @ or api | 86.95.97.160 | Maps a hostname to an IPv4 address. Use @ for root/apex. |
| AAAA | @ or ipv6 | 2a01:4f8:1c1c::2 | Maps a hostname to an IPv6 address. |
| CNAME | www or docs | example.eu. | Canonical alias pointing to another hostname. |
| MX | @ | 10 mail.example.eu. | Mail Exchange record. Specify priority integer followed by host. |
| TXT | @ or _dmarc | "v=spf1 include:_spf.lynio.net ~all" | Text records used for SPF, DKIM, DMARC, and domain verification. |
| NS | sub | ns1.provider.com. | Subzone delegation to secondary or third-party nameservers. |
| SRV | _sip._tcp | 10 60 5060 bigbox.example.eu. | Service record: priority, weight, port, and target. |
| CAA | @ | 0 issue "letsencrypt.org" | Certificate Authority Authorization controlling SSL issuance. |
Apex (@) Handling
You can use the @ symbol in the Record Name field to represent the zone apex (root domain, e.g., example.eu). LYNIO automatically canonicalizes @ into the fully-qualified domain name (example.eu.).
TXT Record Quoting
Content strings in TXT records are automatically enclosed in quotes according to RFC standards. If you paste a raw verification token (e.g., google-site-verification=xyz), LYNIO ensures quotes are formatted correctly before publishing.
Adding and Updating Records
- In the Global DNS table, click on your domain name to open the Zone Details page.
- In the DNS Records card, click Add Record.
- Select the Record Type from the dropdown menu (e.g.,
A,CNAME,MX,TXT). - Enter the Name (e.g.,
www, api, or@for root). - Enter the Content according to the syntax table above.
- For
MXrecords, enter the Priority value (e.g.,10). - Enter the TTL (Seconds).
- Click Save Record.
The update is committed immediately to the edge gateway nodes with zero propagation delay within LYNIO infrastructure.
TTL (Time-To-Live) Best Practices
The TTL value tells downstream DNS resolvers (such as Google 8.8.8.8, Cloudflare 1.1.1.1, or local ISP resolvers) how long in seconds to cache your record before querying LYNIO nameservers again:
- Stable Services (Websites, Production APIs):
3600(1 hour) or86400(24 hours). This reduces lookup latency and query load. - Pre-Migration / Planned IP Changes: Lower the TTL to
300(5 minutes) at least 24 hours prior to switching IP addresses to allow fast cutover. - High-Frequency Testing / Staging:
60to300seconds.
Delegating Your Domain at Your Registrar
To make LYNIO Global DNS authoritative for your domain across the global internet:
- Log in to your registrar control panel (e.g., TransIP, GoDaddy, Namecheap, SIDN).
- Locate the Nameservers management section for your domain.
- Switch from default registrar nameservers to Custom Nameservers.
- Set the primary nameservers:
- Nameserver 1:
ns1.lynio.net - Nameserver 2:
ns2.lynio.net
- Nameserver 1:
- Save the configuration.
Note: Global DNS root registrar updates typically propagate across the internet within 15 minutes to 24 hours depending on the TLD registry.
Verifying DNS Resolution
You can test resolution immediately against LYNIO nameservers without waiting for global registrar propagation:
# Query an A record directly from LYNIO nameserver
dig A example.eu @ns1.lynio.net
# Verify the SOA record and serial number
dig SOA example.eu @ns1.lynio.net
# Test MX record resolution
dig MX example.eu @ns1.lynio.net +short
If you receive an answer with status: NOERROR and the expected IP or hostname, your zone is correctly configured and active.
